I bought this car in August of 1988 with approx. 20,000 miles on it from a body shop after it had been repaired from light right front damage. He replaced the hood, bumper cover, right front fender, radiator core support, radiator, and repainted it. It really looked good! It has a clean title. It came with a 305 V8 Tuned Port Injection motor and a four speed automatic transmission. It has power windows, mirrors, locks and drivers seat. It has mirrored t-tops. It also came with 4 wheel disc brakes. It has cruise and the overhead console. The leather t-top fitted bags are in excellent condition in the back with the roll up cargo cover. It has a black louvered cover on the back hatch glass. The AM/FM/Cassette stereo is high power from the factory with the bass boost button on the dash. The radio no longer works.
It spun the main bearings at 26,000 miles due to a factory defect in the water jacket. Pontiac admitted the defect and offered me a short block for $800 (without labor), so I bought a 350 corvette block through Crabtree Machine in Spruce Pine NC where they build many dirt track car engines. They added model 882 corvette heads. They bored it 0.040 over, installed Badger forged aluminum pistons, a Wolverine cam made for the TPI, (.160 exhaust - .194 intake), turned the crank, ported the intake and exhaust manifolds to the block and balanced everything for around $1800. I added a Hypertech computer chip and a K&N air filter to it. It has a 3:18 rear end and is limited slip. (I just changed the special lubricant last year). I replaced the THM 700-R4 transmission with a rebuilt one in 1999 at 108,205 miles. I also replaced the serpentine belt and water pump recently and it has a new alternator. There is no rust on it as far as I can see. I replaced the hydraulic pistons on the hood and rear hatch last year so they both rise easily and stay up.
This is a fairly well kept high performance sports car that still runs and drives well. It has 136,425 miles on it, but I took good care of it mechanically. It does need some minor repairs but it starts, runs, and drives anywhere. It has the stock 16" alloy wheels, of which the left front one is severely scratched. (I have located a new replacement for $135), but is still driving good with no vibration. It has good tires on it (P245/50/R16), and the t tops are in good shape. The seats need recovering as the seals in the t-tops leak. I keep it covered to keep any more moisture out. The shoulder part of the seat belts is missing but the lap belts still work. The aluminum AC line is cracked above the right fender so the AC does not work. I replaced the exhaust system a few years ago with the stock factory pipes and muffler and they are still in good shape.
I also have the 1985 Pontiac Firebird Service Manual for it and with it you can fix most anything on it. It has decent paint on it and needs buffed out. I also have the original computer chip and will provide it with the car. It has a 160° thermostat in it as required by the Hypertech Chip.
I have had this car for almost 20 years and have driven it only occasionally with two trips to Florida and several to Ohio from my home in Upper-East Tennessee. It is a real head turner with the t-tops out. I will miss it but I have had back surgery and the seats are too low to the ground and I have gotten old. ;~(
It is very fun to drive. I took it to the Bristol Drag races only once back in 1990 and it ran 93.8 mph in the quarter. (It was beaten by a trailered-in Mustang with a huge engine that couldn’t be driven on the road).
I am located in Upper-East Tennessee 15 miles South of the Bristol Raceway NASCAR and Drag track 20 miles south of Interstate 81 in Elizabethton 37643.
